The COVID-19 pandemic is reshaping lives in the United States and around the globe. Every one of us has faced challenges, and deep, longstanding disparities have been exposed. Some disparities may look like someone else’s problem. But they are, in fact, everyone’s problem, and the right solutions will impact us all. Addressing inequality can improve economic growth, make our communities more livable, lower the cost of healthcare, and create jobs. 

For more than 60 years, AARP has fought to build a more equitable society—advocating for policies and programs that empower people to live longer, healthier, more productive lives.

Together with our partners, we are defining the critical issues, engaging the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, and identifying solutions to build a future in which each and every person can thrive.

AARP is convening two virtual series to engage leaders on how we create a future that embraces equity and innovation across the lifespan: Building Equity in Longevity and Equity By Design

 

Highlights of AARP’s 2021 Build Equity Series

Last year AARP’s Thought Leadership team convened a series of conversations with leading experts to highlight solutions to the issues and inequities that have been exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The collective goal of initiatives like this along with AARP’s global conference Redefining Health: New Approaches for How We Live and Age is to find ways to invest in the health of an aging population that is stronger and more adaptable.

New Compendium on Building Equity in Longevity

As an extension of AARP’s Build Equity series, we invited experts from a wide variety of disciplines to imagine how we might close the longevity gap so that we can all live longer, happier, and more prosperous lives. This collection of thought pieces helps answer a power, yet simple question:

How might we make longevity more equitable for all?

Join us, alongside our contributors, in understanding the challenge and taking action in closing the longevity gap.

AARP’s Global Thought Leadership team in collaboration with leading researchers at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) has embarked on an exploration of these geographic disparities in life expectancy at mid-adulthood. Our first report, entitled How Growing Geographic and Racial Disparities Inhibit the Ability to Live Longer and Healthier Lives (October 2020), provides a national-level analysis (1980-2014) of life expectancy data matched with geographic markers, and additional health data from the African American community.
