The COVID-19 pandemic is reshaping lives in the United States and around the globe. Every one of us has faced challenges, and deep, longstanding disparities have been exposed. Some disparities may look like someone else’s problem. But they are, in fact, everyone’s problem, and the right solutions will impact us all. Addressing inequality can improve economic growth, make our communities more livable, lower the cost of healthcare, and create jobs.

For more than 60 years, AARP has fought to build a more equitable society—advocating for policies and programs that empower people to live longer, healthier, more productive lives.

Together with our partners, we are defining the critical issues, engaging the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, and identifying solutions to build a future in which each and every person can thrive.

AARP is convening two virtual series to engage leaders on how we create a future that embraces equity and innovation across the lifespan: Build Equity  and Equity By Design.

The Equitable Path to Healthy Longevity

May 20, 2021 12PM ET

Over the past year, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown day after day the cracks and blind spots in the systems designed and built to keep our communities healthy. We can no longer address the disparities we have witnessed in how various communities access healthcare and maintain their collective health in a piecemeal fashion.

Social Innovation Summit logoAnything that makes it harder for us to get healthy, stay healthy, or recover when we are sick will inevitably widen the longevity gap. As we slowly emerge from this pandemic and look to learn from our collective experiences, it is critical for leaders across sectors to reimagine what it means to support and contribute to longevity so all of us, regardless of race, ethnicity, or income, can enjoy longer, healthier lives.

In partnership between AARP and Social Innovation Summit, our upcoming event will feature national leaders focused on solutions and actions that we as individuals and as members of organizations and companies can take to address the key health equity issues that impact longevity.

Equity in Aging: The Story of Human Longevity

AARP’s Global Thought Leadership team in collaboration with leading researchers at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) has embarked on an exploration of these geographic disparities in life expectancy at mid-adulthood. Our first report, entitled How Growing Geographic and Racial Disparities Inhibit the Ability to Live Longer and Healthier Lives (October 2020), provides a national-level analysis (1980-2014) of life expectancy data matched with geographic markers, and additional health data from the African American community.
